Carmignano, currently perhaps the wine of the smallest wine consortium in Italy, was the ninth DOCG (controlled and guaranteed designation of origin) in the country.
The small size of the territory has allowed Carmignano to enjoy an enviable homogeneity, which translates into the absence of poor soils, making it a wine intended for the most discerning and qualified palates.
The production area of Carmignano DOCG has remained the same since it was delimited by the decree of Cosimo III de’ Medici in 1716 (100 registered hectares, which have increased to 135 in recent years), spread over a hilly strip between 250 and 400 metres above sea level.
Carmignano is not only famous for its homonymous wine, but these hills have also become renowed for other wines, including the young Barco Reale, the cheerful Vin Ruspo and the sweet Vin Santo, all of which can boast the DOC denomination, controlled designation of origin.
